Please join us for our PALS recertification course geared towards dental providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children. Throughout your PALS course, you'll learn to assess, recognize and provide high-quality care to pediatric patients experiencing life-threatening medical emergencies. In addition, our course will challenge your critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and help improve your teamwork skills to provide better patient care.

This course is only valid for re-certification, you need a valid PALs credentials to participate. This is a hybrid computer and in-person course, where you will complete a pre-assessment online, prior to the course, and complete the skills portion and post-assessment in-person. Practical Pediatric Oral Conscious Sedation in the Dental Office:  A Review and Update

Course Description:
This course will focus on various routes of sedation including oral, submucosal and intranasal modalities.  A focus on patient assessment, review of systems and case selection will be discussed for conscious sedation patients in the dental office. It will discuss various levels of sedation that can be accomplished with varied medications that are readily available to a trained pediatric dentist.  A thorough review of drug modalities, monitoring systems and unique patient encounters will be reviewed.  Lastly, a discussion related to management of medical emergencies within the office as they relate to sedations patients will occur.
Course Objectives:
  1. Describe components of informed consent, specifically related to conscious sedation
  2. Describe various drug regimens, modalities of administration, drug metabolism, and drug interactions in conscious sedation
  3. Recognize various drugs and how their specific pharmacologic properties may interact with and impact other commonly used drugs
  4. Identify and manage common medical emergencies related to oral conscious sedation

Dr. Bahn is a graduate of the Temple University School of Dentistry (2006-magna cum laude) and Temple University Hospital-Episcopal Division (2008) with his pediatric dental certificate.  During his second year in residency, he served as the chief resident.  He is the former clinical program director and current program director for the Temple University Hospital-Northeastern Campus Pediatric Dental Resident Program.  The program is one the largest pediatric dental residency in the United States, consisting of 20 pediatric dental residents.  The program performs over 2,200 oral conscious sedations each year.
Previously he was awarded the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) Master Clinician Scholarship and is currently appointed to the AAPD’s Speakers Bureau.  He currently serves as an Oral Board Examiner for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) and is board certified by the ABPD and the American Board of Laser Surgery (ABLS).
Clinically he enjoys teaching and performing various routes of conscious sedation, advanced restorative options and techniques for hypomineralized and hypoplastic molars and the utilization of a carbon dioxide laser in pediatric dentistry. 
He is an active member and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and member in the Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) and Philadelphia County Dental Society.  He serves as the Treasurer for the Pennsylvania Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and on the Board of Governors for the Philadelphia County Dental Society.
